How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) check here even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that website I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. Test them out by putting your audi a5 replacement key DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors check here go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. 5. Tachometer
